Off-gassing refers to the release of vapors from new synthetic items in an interior environment. Think of that “new car smell,” or the aroma of new carpeting just after it’s installed. While these smells can be pleasant in their own way, some people worry about the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can trigger or exacerbate respiratory issues for vulnerable groups—namely the very young, older adults, or people with allergies. The potential risk of carpet “off-gassing” has gotten a lot of press in recent years, so Floor Coverings International® of is here to offer some tips and advice for limiting possible exposure to off-gassing when installing new carpet in your home!

Is Off-Gassing Dangerous?

Like any type of environmental irritant, the danger of off-gassing largely depends on the type of chemicals, the concentration, the duration of exposure, and individual sensitivity. In truth, any new item made from synthetic materials can potentially release gases or fumes into the home. This includes things like appliances and electronic items, interior wall paint, cleaning products, and even brand new toys. However, by taking a few common-sense steps, the risks of off-gassing from new carpeting can be minimized for all members of your household.

Ventilate the Environment

The best way to minimize any potential off-gassing is with good ventilation. Keep windows, doors, and vents open as much as possible during the first 24-72 hours after your carpet has been installed. This simple step can make all the difference and you will soon notice that the new carpet smell has dissipated. You might also wait a couple of days before moving members of sensitive groups (i.e. young children, people with severe allergies, etc.) back into a room with new carpet. Pets can also more sensitive to fumes and should be kept out of the room as much as possible for the first couple of days while the carpet is airing out. After being ventilated for a bit, vacuum the carpet to remove any dust or debris from installation, and you should be good to go!
