Many folks looking for new carpet have a color in mind, but a specific style is harder to pin down. Here are the basic differences between the two major types of carpeting, cut pile and loop pile, and how to choose the right one for your home.

How It’s Made

In order to know the differences between cut and loop pile, it helps to have an understanding of the carpeting manufacturing process. Tufted carpet—the type of carpeting found in almost all American homes—consists of yarn woven in and out of a backing material. The yarn can consist of natural fibers, such as wool or cotton, as well as synthetic fibers like olefin, polyester, and nylon. The way that it is woven results in rows of loops. When these loops are left intact, you have loop pile. When each loop is severed into two strands, you get cut pile.

Durability vs. Comfort

If you are looking for comfort, cut pile carpeting is likely the best option. With soft, separated strands, cut pile feels soft and warm underfoot. That is why cut pile carpeting is the most popular option for wall-to-wall home carpeting.

This comfort comes at a cost: compromised durability. Loop pile carpeting is strong and hardy. It isn’t nearly as soft and comfortable as cut pile, but it lasts longer and can take more abuse. Loop pile carpeting is great for high traffic areas in the home, as well as commercials spaces. It is not uncommon to find loop pile carpeting in retail settings or offices.
