Choosing a new carpet can be exciting. There are so many variations and customizations you can make to piece together the perfect carpet for you. Color and pile are important factors in determining the overall appearance of your carpet, but you’ll also want to think about which carpet fiber will make the most sense for your lifestyle. There are four main fiber materials to choose from; each with its own set of unique pros and cons. At Floor Coverings International® of , we have a great selection of carpet materials. Not sure which one is right for you? Check out our handy guide, then schedule a free in-home consultation to receive a personalized recommendation.

Polyester: Soft & Stain-Resistant

Polyester carpets are known for being soft and extremely stain resistant. The fibers actually act to repel liquid which makes them perfect for high-spill areas such as dining rooms. Polyester is also great at holding its color and isn’t easy to fade. It’s fairly inexpensive which makes it widely popular in homes.

Olefin: Colorful & Water-Resistant

Olefin (also called Polypropylene) is similar to polyester in its ability to repel water-based liquids and hold its color. Olefin carpets dry quickly and are often used for outdoor applications. An important consideration with olefin is that it can collect oil and is susceptible to food stains. Olefin is an inexpensive material that makes a great carpet for kids playrooms.

Nylon: Durable & Long-Lasting

Nylon is the most durable of the synthetic fibers. It is strong and unlike polyester or olefin, won’t matte over time. It also has the capacity to repel oil stains and makes for an all-around reliable carpet. Nylon carpets will cost more than other materials but are worthwhile investments for their impressive lifespan.

Wool: Luxurious & Natural

Wool is hands-down the most luxurious of the carpet materials. It is soft, comfy, and naturally stain resistant. These carpets will cost you more upfront, but they’ll last significantly longer than a synthetic carpet with regular maintenance. With a wool carpet, you’ll want to make sure you use special wool carpet cleaner. Otherwise, you could harm the natural fibers.
